“Which one should I give her for the inflammation?” The owner asking was standing in my exam room with a nine-year-old spayed female Labrador mix, sixty-eight pounds, who’d started hesitating at the bottom of the porch steps that spring. She’d read about postbiotics in a dog-food forum the night before and wanted to know if they’d do the same job as the fish oil her old vet had recommended two years earlier. Fish oil and postbiotics aren’t competing for the same job. What “inflammation” means changes which supplement is even relevant
Owners hear “anti-inflammatory” on a bag of chews and assume it covers whatever’s bothering their dog. It doesn’t work that way, and I’d rather say that plainly than hedge it. A dog with osteoarthritis has synovial inflammation and cartilage breakdown driven partly by lipid signaling — arachidonic acid pathways, prostaglandins, the stuff omega-3s can measurably shift. Where fish oil actually has the data
This is the category where I feel comfortable being direct with clients. A randomized, double-blinded, controlled trial published in the AVMA followed 38 client-owned dogs with osteoarthritis at two university veterinary clinics. Dogs eating a food with 3.5% fish oil omega-3s showed a significant 5.6% improvement in peak vertical force — the force-plate measure of how much weight a dog is willing to put on a sore limb — while the control group’s change was negligible. That’s an objective, instrumented measurement, not an owner’s impression of a “happier” dog, and it’s the kind of data point I look for before I tell someone a supplement is worth the money. Where postbiotics actually have the data — and it isn’t joints
I’ve watched a fair number of owners get sold on postbiotics for the wrong reason: a chew markets “anti-inflammatory” support and the owner assumes it’ll help the limp. For a dog with gut-driven inflammation — loose stool, gas, suspected barrier dysfunction — postbiotics have building evidence at the level of fecal biomarkers and microbial shifts, and that’s the lane where they belong until better joint-specific data shows up. I’d resist any product that implies one supplement covers both; the mechanisms are different enough that I don’t think the evidence will ever fully merge.
The strongest counterargument I hear is that inflammation is systemic, so anything that lowers overall inflammatory burden should help both joints and gut to some degree — and there’s a kernel of truth in that; a dog with chronic gut inflammation can run a slightly higher baseline inflammatory tone that theoretically touches other tissues. But “theoretically touches” isn’t the same as a measured effect, and until there’s a force-plate or synovial-fluid study on postbiotics, I’m not going to tell an owner to expect joint relief from a gut-focused product. If your dog has both problems, that’s usually two supplements, not one, and it’s worth a bloodwork recheck before you stack them so you’re not layering cost and pill burden on a guess.
